Before you call for service …

There are many minor problems that you can easily fix yourself. For example, if your gutters aren’t working properly, look for the problem you’re experiencing on this chart and see if it’s a do-it-yourself job.

Problem Possible Causes
Water backs up onto roofing.  Gutter or downspout clogged or damaged. 
Water runs down fascia and siding. Gutter protection or leaf guard is causing the water to collect, causing a dam.
Water backs up in one end of the gutter. There is an improper slope of the gutter, loose gutter spikes, or hangers causing sagging.
Gutter Leaks There is a loose joint, solder, or hole.
The soffit is wet or leaking There is a leak in your roof somewhere.
Loose fascia The gutter or downspout is damaged or faulty, the face board damaged, or structural damage.
Ice buildup at the eave or over gutters. Inadequate attic ventilation or blocked soffit
Attic Leaks There is damaged roofing, shingle, or flashing; the gutter is damaged. The skylight, soil pipe, or chimney could be damaged or leaking in flashing around each.
Damp attic Blocked soffit vent, roof vents not working properly, or improper ventilation and insulation.
Blocked soffit vents Insulation or bird nests
The gable vent is loose or damaged Insulation or bird nests
Water runoff runs behind gutter and down fascia Insufficient roof overhang.
Water runoff below the downspout erodes the ground
around foundation
No splash block or splash block is out of place.
Loose or rattling downspout Loose bracket
